American Red Cross Lifeguard Class


The Christian County YMCA offers a full YMCA of the USA Lifeguard training course that includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer (CPRO) and First Aid, equipment-based rescues for aquatic environments, accident prevention, and decision-making skills. Participants must be 16 years old by the end of the class. Attendance, full participation, and successful completion of written tests and performance of all water skills are required.

Requirements Include

  • 15 years old by the first day of training
  • 300 yard continuous swim; either freestyle or breaststroke; using rhythmic breathing
  • 2 minute tread with hands in armpits
  • Timed event consisting of swimming 20 yards, surface dive into 9 feet of water + retrieve 10 pound object, and return keeping face above water, exit water not using the ladder. This must be completed in under 1 minute + 40 seconds.

Schedule

January 2nd:

From 8 am – 12 pm, located in the basement, class members will be reviewing professional guard, facility safety, and injury prevention

From 1 pm – 5 pm, located in the basement, the class will be reviewing OSHA, breathing emergency, and O2.

January 3rd:

From 8 am – 12 pm, located in the aquatic center, the class will cover water rescues and spinal rescues.

From 1 pm – 5 pm, located in the basement, the class will be reviewing CPR and First Aid.

January 4th:

From 8 am – 12 pm, located in the aquatic center, the class will cover water skills.

From 1 pm – 4 pm, located in the basement, the class will be reviewing and taking written tests.

From 4 pm – 6 pm, located in the aquatic center, the class will be completing water tests.

 

All training is done at the Christian County YMCA. However, completion of the course does not guarantee employment. Please call the Y at 287-7271 for more information.
